Most improved is a label that certainly fit quarterbacks Clint Trickett of West Virginia and Trevone Boykin of TCU. A year ago, Trickett looked lost at times trying to run the Mountaineers' offense after transferring from Florida State. Boykin was relegated to wide receiver until relieving injured quarterback Casey Pachall. Both Trickett and Boykin ended up throwing seven touchdowns and seven interceptions as their teams finished 4-8.

Auburn and Mississippi spent the week dismissing their standing in the first College Football Playoff rankings as mostly irrelevant. The fourth-ranked Tigers and seventh-ranked Rebels, both among the initial top four teams, meet Saturday night in what could amount to the first elimination round of the playoffs. ''We're focused solely really on one ranking and that would be on Dec. 7,'' said Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze, referring to the final rankings that set up the four-team field. Auburn (6-1, 3-1) is third in the CFP rankings, one spot ahead of the Rebels (7-1, 4-1).

Thanks to another remarkable comeback by the Seminoles and quarterback Jameis Winston, their hopes of competing for a second straight national championship remain intact. Winston threw three touchdown passes to offset a three-interception start and Dalvin Cook had two long scoring runs to help second-ranked Florida State rally for a 42-31 victory over Louisville on Thursday night. It’s a spirited mix of college tailgating, SEC rivalry at its best, and heated insults spewed between an evenly split crowd. Three years later, I’ve finally gotten to the bottom of things. So, without further delay, I give you the history of the “Gators wear jean shorts” insult. It started back in 1997. If I have to hear about Lindsay Scott and "Run Lindsay Run" again, I will go off on someone in red and black. Losses can be tough to take, especially when they come in overtime against a division rival at home. Such was the case for Penn State Saturday night after coming up short in double overtime against No. 13 Ohio State. But this one felt differently. I generally do not subscribe to the idea of moral victories, and head coach James Franklin stated the same after the game Saturday night, but sometimes you can hold your head up high following a loss. Saturday night was one of those exceptions to the rule. Penn State is clearly behind Ohio State in overall talent and depth on its roster. Ohio State…

Does Alabama really need the SEC championship to make the playoffs and win the national championship? Maybe not. Would it matter to Tide fans if Alabama took a bye on the trip to Atlanta, but was still able to participate in the College Football Playoff? When Ole Miss lost to LSU, it gave Alabama new hope for an SEC championship, which is usually one of the most coveted trophies for the Tide and its fans.  In the BCS days, it was often a springboard to the national championship. The SEC West has become so top-heavy with great teams (that cannibalize each other during the regular season),…
