    19 Apr 2014 | 7:18 pm
Signing autographs and taking pictures for a gaggle of fans around him, Marvin Zanders seemed right at home. ''Just another day at the office,'' the Missouri quarterback said. How do you look at the specter?” And this was how Scottie Wilbekin answered.  “The ‘specter?’ What does that mean?” UF’s senior point guard was then told it meant the shadow of being No. 1.read more

  • Saturday Edge: Wrapping up Penn State’s spring ☆

    Kevin McGuire
    18 Apr 2014 | 3:36 pm
I was asked to share my thoughts on Penn State coming out of the spring practice season. Here is a sample of what I had to offer. Be sure to check out the entire wrap-up on The Saturday Edge and give it a follow on Twitter @SaturdayEdge. This is going to be quite an interesting season for Penn State, and if all goes right for the Nttany Lions there should be nothing holding them back from improving on their 2013 win total of seven games, despite still playing through sanctions and reduced scholarships. James Franklin should bring a new spark to the program and the offense has players who can…

This video is a couple of days old, but it is worth sharing in case you happened to miss it recently. In it you see James Franklin sending the message to his team that they are going to work hard, but they are also going to loosen up and have some fun at the same time when appropriate. This special teams game has been done before at other programs, and perhaps it has been done at Penn State before (I don’t know for sure). It doesn’t seem like the sort of thing that would have happened during a Joe Paterno practice. Maybe a Bill O’Brien practice, but again I’m not sure…

Alabama Athletic Director Bill Battle has a plan. I get an email from him every week telling me so. It reads more like a report than a plan, and from the looks of things, all seems to be going pretty well in Tuscaloosa. For instance, his last email told me: Men’s Golf is currently ranked 1st in the country. Bama Softball is dominant, once again, ranked 2nd. Gymnastics is currently ranked 4th and in prime position for another National Championship. Baseball is back, fresh off a series win over Auburn, ranked 9th. Women’s Tennis is also 9th. So is Men’s Track. Women’s…
  • How about a ‘real’ spring game?

    Hunter Ford
    14 Apr 2014 | 3:35 am
By Hunter Ford Some people see things as they are and ask… “why?”   Others dream of things that never were and ask… “why not?” In 2012, Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney advocated the idea of college football teams playing exhibition games against other schools instead of having intra-squad scrimmages. Why not?  I have been wishing for this for years.  And I have written about it before.  I can’t claim it was an original idea.  If my memory serves me, former UAB football coach Watson Brown brought up the idea to me in a conversation I had with him long ago when I was…

Alabama Spring Practice: We’ll take football any way we can get it By The Conduit I admit it, I’m a freak for Spring practice games. I don’t understand why more people don’t enjoy them. It’s a free football game in the middle of the non-football season, the weather is fantastic for spectating, plus the only people at the games are all pulling for the same team. It seems to be a cultural epidemic; either your school’s fans care about the Spring practice game or they don’t. At the University of Alabama, we care about our Spring game. We’ll take football any way we can get it.

The NCAA tournament is good for dramatic surprises every year. My bracket was helped dramatically by a few early round surprises, but no one saw Duke falling to Mercer. Afterall, the Blue Devils are coached by a living legend, arguably the greatest living coach still in the game. And, nobody thought Duke would fall in their first game two years straight. But they did, as a small Baptist school in south Georgia called Mercer took them down. Now, fans of another small school in Georgia think Mercer “owns” Duke. The chances of Saban losing to Malzahn…I mean Duke losing to…

We are now less than a month away from the draft and the teams are getting to know the prospects more and more as the free agency frenzy has quieted down with the teams focusing heavily on the draft. 1. Houston Texans = Blake Bortles QB Central Florida Houston seems to be set on taking a QB with the #1 pick and it would come down to their preference which in this case favors Bortles immensely due to the connections between Bill O’Brien & George Godsey to George O’Leary. The Tennessee Volunteers have a very tough opener in week one against the Utah State Aggies. Originally, the game was scheduled on Saturday (August 30th) but the game has now been moved to Sunday (August 31st) which will bring a lot more attention to the game. Did I mention that the game will also be broadcast on the SEC Network? Over the last few years, Utah State has become a very good “mid major” program. Under current Wisconsin head coach Gary Andersen, the Aggies turned things around during Andersen’s third season posting a 7-6 record in 2011 and then went on to an 11-2 mark in…

Follow @martyfnemec I love Amazon. I think they are the best online retailer on the planet and everyone who knows me well knows that I use Amazon for everything. I will sing their praises until the end of the world. However, that doesn’t mean that Amazon doesn’t mess up. I woke up today at 5 a.m. and did my normal routine of checking my emails (and Facebook) in the hopes that it would help me wake up. Amazon sends me emails regularly with different deals or products catered to my interests. I don’t open many of them but I prefer getting them because every now and then, I do…

Follow @martyfnemec I admit that I’m a tough sell with TV shows. I have probably watched two or three episodes of a hundred shows. I just don’t have time for TV shows that can’t keep my attention. I expect shows to make me interested in the futures of the characters. I expect to laugh or cry (feel like it). I expect to feel emotion. Three of the only shows I have ever finished and made me satisfied with my decision were Friday Night Lights, Breaking Bad, and Arrested Development. Game of Thrones definitely meets all of my expectations for great shows. I won’t ruin what happened, but…
