Sporting News' Dave Curtis analyzes what Friday's buzz means to college football. Where the Buffalo roam The buzz about Dan Hawkins getting dismissed (and bought out) at Colorado grew hot not because the Buffs lost by three on the road to a ranked team Thursday night. The bad vibes are back because of how things went down. Colorado's final four offensive possessions ended with a missed 49-yard field goal, a turnover on downs (incomplete pass on fourth-and-2 at the Oklahoma State 28), a fumble near midfield and a punt with 2:45 remaining. The Buffs either led by four or trailed by three points…

Matt Hayes These are the bland Saturdays when no one is safe. No, really. How often have we seen this is the past: the relatively uneventful developing into the remarkably significant. Was just channel flipping and caught the end of a conversation between Steve Phillips and Colin Cowherd on some ESPN show.  The gist of their conversation was that playoff baseball with days off isn't structured to determine what team is the best especially in relation to the regular season which has teams playing almost daily.  Instead, success tends to shift to teams with impact players (read: the ones with the financial resources). Its an interesting consideration especially when so much of the playoff talk in college football is about fairness and letting the little guy get in…

You won’t see the following in this clip, but it all happened:  -three of Stanford’s players holding up the Axe Trophy on the 17 yard line in celebration as Cal was still making laterals.  -11 illegal players who had come onto the field during the play.  -The thousands of Cal fans who left the stadium after Stanford went ahead on the field goal.  Years later some of those fans told SI it was the biggest mistake of their life for walking out on history.  Below is the insight I can give you to describe the wildest ending to a sporting event you will ever see.    20 seconds – From…

There was some thought that this wasn’t even necessary this week. Honestly, it really probably isn’t. Predicting the top-10 should be difficult in November. There should be matchups between top-25 teams. Prime time football should be complimented by prime time basketball, making this one of the best times of the year for any sports fan. Here’s what should never be happening: Florida vs. Florida International. Alabama vs. Chattanooga. Boise State cannot control the fact that Utah State is in its conference, but we’ll stay away from guessing how big of a blowout it will…

Today’s the day.  The Ohio State-Michigan football game.  It often the most important game of the Big Ten season because these two teams are always in the hunt for a championship.  But this year it’s a little different.  Ohio State has already secured the Big Ten Champions title for the 5th year in a row and we are headed to the Rose Bowl for the first time in 13 years!!!  Michigan has had a rough couple of years and a win today would give them bragging rights, a moral victory.  I love this game, always the last game of the season, but I’m always a little sad too…

There’s drinking beer by your car in a parking lot, there’s tailgating, then there’s professional Tailgaiting.  At the University of South Carolina, we know how to enjoy ourselves before a game.  If you are one of the lucky ones, you can afford one of these renovated train cabooses and join the others in the ultimate of pre-game warmup.  Most of these Cockabooses are outfitted with bathrooms, kitchens, 50 inch HDTV’s, marble floors with the Gamecock logo (in marble) as the centerpiece.  I’m guessing I could actually live in one of these.  There is nothing…

Track and Field: is a competitor male or female? It isn’t always clear. Football This came out a while ago. Texas Tech lost to Texas A&M by a score of 52-30; this is the same Aggie team that got scorched 62-14 by Kansas State, 65-10 by Oklahoma and 47-19 by Arkansas. So how did the Texas Tech coach handle it? That’s right: it was “the fat little girlfriends”. Yes, he used that term repeatedly. Speaking of coaches: Coach Mangino is under fire for “being abusive”. Frankly, I wonder if this has more to do with his losing 5 games in a row than anything…

    27 Oct 2009 | 1:57 pm
Early last week, the same SEC officiating crew who allegedly blew both a late celebration call that helped LSU beat Georgia and a phantom personal foul call that helped Florida beat Arkansas was suspended for two weeks by SEC commish Mike Slive. Perhaps smelling blood in the water, some other SEC coaches decided to pile on after Saturday's games, questioning some calls made during some heated conference games. Vanderbilt's Bobby Johnson, probably the most diplomatic coach in the fracas, took issue with a 35-yard TD catch by South Carolina that showed the receiver's foot on the line: "I'm not…

  • Tech, Bulldogs to face off in Kickoff Classic?

    8 Oct 2009 | 9:14 am
While Georgia Tech and Georgia have traditionally ended their seasons with their rivalry game, both schools confirmed talks to start their seasons in the 2011 Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic in the Georgia Dome. Officials from both schools said Wednesday they are discussing the possibility of playing their state rival in a neutral-site game in Atlanta to kick off the 2011 season. Georgia Tech, which is scheduled to host the Bulldogs that year under the normal home-and-home format, would not give up a game at Bobby Dodd Stadium, said athletic director Dan Radakovich. Instead, the talks involve…

Officials from the SEC have already confirmed their participation to The Birmingham News. Under the terms, the Gator will get "at least" the sixth pick of bowl-eligible SEC teams. The pick position could vary on a year-to-year basis, but more details would be announced once the Big 10 announces its bowl agreements next week. The Gator Bowl is also in final talks to become…

And the fact that the two dumbasses who were dumb enough to wear Tennessee gear for their robbery attempt? They gone. And they took my dreams of a Steak Bowl loss with them. Anyway… Alabama: Okay, I’ll give you credit. Mississippi State was never really in the game. And that’s an impressive feat. For anybody who has played any level of organized football… And it is this. Wednesday is the hardest day of practice. You put the gameplan in, you hit hardest, you do your most running to be prepared for the 4th quarter? And as such, you may feel a need to let off some steam. A few would run headlong into their studies. Some would watch a television based program. Many would hit up that Madden. Or, you could commit a light felony. Sounds crazy, you say? Apparently, the SEC controversies are about to disappear. We know all about how Patrick Peterson got one foot down and had an obvious pick called out because of some inexplicable reason. (Though you notice how all of the bad calls went against teams playing Florida or Alabama with one notable exception? Maybe Mike Silve is Gulf Coast for David Stern). But we have a situation where Florida and Alabama have two weak schedules finishing out. Odds are that they will get a chance at a BCS Championship game. Neither team looks completely worthy. But hey? Free money. Anyway… Florida: I’m…

It’s Gimme Week at the SEC ballpark I mean really. Four games versus the Division 1-AA is the sort of thing that the rest of the world looks at when they get sick and tired of the medias talk of the SEC as the single greatest conference of all time. So you know what that means? Auburn Ole Miss Georgia Kentucky You get a gimme to better your bowl eligibility. Congratulations. As for the ones with guts and nuts?  LSU at -7.5 Alabama Suddenly, this game gets interesting after Alabama goes on a bye and LSU blanked Tulane 42-0. In the perception game? It’s going to be a classic. In…

  • Baseball Shows The Flaws In A Playoff, Again

Was just channel flipping and caught the end of a conversation between Steve Phillips and Colin Cowherd on some ESPN show.  The gist of their conversation was that playoff baseball with days off isn't structured to determine what team is the best especially in relation to the regular season which has teams playing almost daily.  Instead, success tends to shift to teams with impact players (read: the ones with the financial resources). Its an interesting consideration especially when so much of the playoff talk in college football is about fairness and letting the little guy get in…

  • An Argument For Charlie Weis

    20 Nov 2009 | 11:42 am
Every website, large and small, has given their two cents on the Notre Dame-Charlie Weis-job security situation. Plenty of speculation has been made about the future of the portly offensive minded man and most people see the writing on the wall. The has been no reassurance of job security, no "we're 100% behind our coach" as there have been at Notre Dame for the embattled head coach in the past. Is Charlie really the Irish's problem? Sure he's smug, arrogant and he dropped these gems: "Let them try to stop a pro-style offense, which has multiple personnel groups and multiple formations.

This past weekend we were able to make yet another ambitious move up towards 70% by going 26-9 or 74.3% for the week's slate of games. That brings our season total from a decent 64.7% and 82-47 to an even healthier 65.9% and 108-56 for the games picked here. Here's the conference breakdown: ACC (5-1) Big East (3-1)…
